Review on Caltrate

Let’s look at what’s in it –
Ingredients:

Ingredients: Active Ingredients: Calcium Carbonate, Maltodextrin. Contains <2% of Blue 2 Lake, Cholecalciferol (Vit. D3), Croscarmellose Sodium, Magnesium Stearate, Polyethylene Glycol, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Red 40 Lake, Talc, Titanium Dioxide, Tocopherols (to Preserve Freshness), Yellow 6 Lake.

  • Calcium Carbonate is extremely hard to absorb without an agent such as an amino acid such as chelated calcium. This formula has no, chelating agents/no amino acids. In addition to this, supplementing calcium, especially carbonate, has been shown to cause heart attacks, strokes, kidney stones and damage, constipation, and acid reflux which in turn can lead to Leaky Gut, a condition known to cause and exacerbate OP. Also, it has shown in studies to increase fractures, and to give only a 1% increase in Bone Mineral Density (BMD). It carries many significant health risks while giving very little benefit.
  • Maltodextrin is a sugar and most of know that sugar hinders mineral absorption. So in addition to already hard-to-absorb calcium, sugar is added to make it even less likely one will get much calcium.
  • 2% Blue Lake is a food dye known to have a list of nasty side effects as well as being a cancer-causing agent.
  • Cholecalciferol or hormone D3 has been found to cause bone density loss (Opening the Doors to Reversing and Healing Osteoporosis) as well as have other side effects, especially when taken with calcium such as hypercalcemia/hypercalciuria. 1 Other studies have shown taking vitamin D3 with calcium increases the risks of supplementing calcium on its own.
  • Sodium – salt is not the friend of those with osteoporosis and this is most likely a very cheap form but at least not clean sea salt which would be one of the very few better choices.
  • Magnesium Stearate is a somewhat debatable antinutrient, it is one listed which does have some negative effects that folks may choose to do without. 2
  • Polyethylene Glycol is the primary ingredient in Anti-freeze.
  • Polyvinyl Alcohol is a petroleum-based alcohol used in polymers and in supplements as coatings on tablets/pills. Could have a cancer link.
  • Talc has been proven in the last couple of decades to cause cancer.
  • More cancer-causing food dyes.

This product has a lot of drawbacks in my opinion. It is not something I would put in my body.
