Tales of Horsetail

HORSETAIL (Equisetum arvense), also called Shavegrass, Scouring Rush, Shave Brush, Bottlebrush, and Pewterwort, is of the Equisetaceae family. The folk tales on this herb hint at the plant being used as a fine-grade sandpaper to file stone projectile points, as well as a polish for wood and cookware. The Latin name translates to “‘horse tail of the fields’ and was known at one time to grow more than 40 feet tall. It reproduces by spores released from the flower head. 1
