Considering Cod Liver Oil

What’s so great about Cod Liver Oil? It is used in several health protocols and products and has many benefits. So what can it do for you?

Benefits of Taking Cod Liver Oil

Excellent Nutrient Source for Seed Cycling

One of the vital uses of Cod Liver Oil is in Seed Cycling, which calls for 5,000 mg of cod liver oil each day of the Follicular or New Moon to Full Moon phase. This provides an average of 500 I.U. of vitamin A and 350-500 I.U. of vitamin D3 according to Weston Price Foundation, in approximately 1 teaspoon. 1

Helps Reduce Inflammation

In addition to healthy, natural sources of Vitamin A and D3, it’s got Omega-3 Fatty acids with substantial levels of EPA & DHA, which are good for reducing inflammation. 2 3 4

Builds and Strengthens Bones

Studies have shown that when accompanied by a diet high in calcium, taking a vitamin D supplement like cod liver oil can reduce bone loss among adults and strengthen fragile bones in children. 5 6 7

Heart Health

Omega Fatty Acids have been shown to

  • Help reduce triglycerides 8 9 10
  • Help lower blood pressure 11 12
  • Increase HDL cholesterol 13 14
  • Prevent plaque formation in the arteries 15 16

Eye Health

Due to the high omega-3, which reduces inflammation, and vitamin A, it is believed that Cod Liver Oil can protect against vision loss from inflammatory eye diseases like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). 17 18

Digestive Health

Animal studies have shown cod liver oil aids in healing ulcers in the gut and stomach, as well as reducing inflammation and ulceration of the gut and stomach lining. 19 20

It is therefore believed that cod liver oil can also benefit humans in the same way.

Lung and Respiratory Health

In a study in 2004 with 94 students, Cod Liver Oil demonstrated benefits in preventing upper respiratory infections. 21

Development of Childhood Diabetes Prevention

Another study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed women who took Cod Liver Oil during their pregnancy had fewer children who developed type 1 diabetes. 22 23

Arthritis

Some studies have shown that Cod Liver Oil can reduce the suffering from arthritis/Rheumatoid Arthritis due to inflammation. One showed that 39% of the study participants reduced their NSAID intake. 24 25

There can be some side effects with excessive or overuse in high doses, and it is suggested to stay at safe doses. Most are minor, though those taking blood thinners may want to speak with their physician before using. Seed Cycling would likely be the highest safe level at 5000 mg per day. 26
