Bone Broth for Your Gut and Bone Health

Not everybody can, has the time, or wants to go to the effort to make it often. Or maybe you find you don’t have any on hand. So, if you need to buy bone broth, look for something as close to homemade as possible.

It should be made with wholesome, organic, real food ingredients like those you should find in your own kitchen. It should also be made without additives, coloring, or flavor enhancers, like MSG (a neurotoxin). You want to find Bone Broth that is made with organic, 100% grass-fed/pasture-raised, or pastured, free-range, or wild-caught bones, as well as organic vegetables (mirepoix – carrots, celery, onions).

The bones should be simmered for a lengthy time, enough to extract all the nutrients and a good, rich flavor with all the minerals possible, as well as all the gelatin/collagen available, or find one where the bones were cooked under pressure.

This is where many may fall short. Some do not add vegetables, and most, if not all, remove all fat, which is one of the healthier nutrients. Some brands, however, will be found to have been made with vegetables and contain good amounts of protein/collagen, and some flavor, tasting “close” to homemade.

Attempting to ease the burden of searching for such a good bone broth, I’ve listed quite a few to choose from. Since everyone has their own “taste” in bone broth, these are not listed according to any rating of popularity.

For those who prefer to make their own homemade, you will find a recipe in the following linked article. . . Bone Broth or Stock

The following link will take you to the To Your Health blog site, where you can see some of the clean brands I’ve found to obtain bone broth. While there are others, the above recommendations should be followed when purchasing bone broth. But the list of products offered in the article will give you ample selection to find one you’ll love.

  1. Hi,

I thought apple cider vinegar wasn’t good for your bones…I don’t see it on the Anti-Nutrient list but I thought I read it somewhere…

I have been getting Gourmend Organic Bone Broth & I have also, gotten Butcher’s Organic Bone Broth.

Can you help me out with this info?

    Thank You,

    Carol Muller

    1. Hi Carol,
Yes, you are correct and I applaud you for being so observant. The reason it should be avoided is the very same reason we add it to bone broth: to pull minerals from the bones. What you have not caught as yet, is the fact that when it is cooked either under high pressure of very long term as in making good bone broth, the acid is broken down and left inert. While I have no issues with Butcher’s, I do somewhat with the Gourmend. It contains tomato paste. If properly prepared, it may not be a much of an issue but tomatoes have lectins in the skins and seeds. If cooked first, then strained, the lectins would go into the juice/puree that is then made into paste. It also has citric acid but it may get broken down like the acetic acid in vinegar. My greater concern is the lectins which damage the gut.

      1. Douglas,

Thank you for your quick response! The Gourmend Organic Chicken Bone Broth doesn’t list tomato paste in the ingredients …I stay away from anything with tomatoes in it now but am glad that I have such a variety of bone broths that I can pick from now, knowing about the apple cider vinegar.

Thank you again for getting back to me so quickly, my daughter, who has arthritis & also, told me to start following you, told me that it didn’t make sense about the apple cider vinegar because as you say, it pulls minerals from the bones.

So much to retain but taking it one day at a time…one day I’ll be making my own bone broth!

I really appreciate you & all of your knowledge!

        Carol

P.S. I like the idea of these emails better than facebook!
